SEPTEMBER 5, 2001, Mobile, AL and Somerville, MA - Accelerated Technology, Inc. (ATI), the leader of source code and non-royalty based Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS) software, and Skelmir LLC, a developer of virtual machines, libraries and compilation tools for Java, today announced that they have signed an agreement to expand their relationship from a partnership to a reseller arrangement. According to the agreement, ATI will resell Skelmir's CEE-J virtual machine out-of-the-box to Nucleus developers building Java-enabled devices.
There are four flavors of CEE-J ported to ATI's Nucleus PLUS real-time kernel. These include: CEE-J for CLDC (Connected Limited Device Configuration); CEE-J for MIDP (Mobile Information Device Profile); CEE-J for EmbeddedJava; and CEE-J for PersonalJava. These implementations are currently available for the PowerPC, XScale and SH4 architectures. Support for ARM and MIPS are scheduled for release by Q1 2002.
Nucleus developers will now have a one-stop-shop in which to acquire royalty-free virtual machine technology with small footprint and high performance features. Whether designing a Web phone or a full-featured set-top box, Nucleus users implementing the CEE-J virtual machine will have all the tools they need to deploy a wide range of embedded Java applications.
"It has been extremely difficult for us to find a good partner that is open to understanding our strategy and business model as it applies to the use of Java in embedded systems. Skelmir has been particularly sensitive to our requirements and we have put together a program that benefits Skelmir, Accelerated Technology, and most importantly, our customers. CEE-J has all of the benefits we were looking for in an embedded Java solution without all of the difficult licensing issues associated with other offerings in this space," said Neil Henderson, president of Accelerated Technology, Inc. "I am extremely excited about the potential of the CEE-J offering to Nucleus customers."
"It just made sense to deepen our relationship with Accelerated Technology. Their business model closely reflects our own as does their drive to service the embedded marketplace with small footprint, high performance and affordable technology. Together, we will be able to better serve the corporate consumer striving to get their Java-enabled devices on the market as quickly as possible," said Shari Agatstein, president, Skelmir, LLC.
The Nucleus PLUS kernel provides efficient, high performance task management, inter-task communication, inter-task synchronization, memory management, and component query features. Optimizations in system clock, interrupt and compiler register usage are only part of the advanced features provided by Nucleus PLUS. The kernel handles difficult issues such as priority inversion while minimizing the interrupt latency to a few microseconds. The source code of Nucleus PLUS is fully documented and it is provided with a manual containing an in-depth description of its internal data and processing structure.
CEE-J, the Compatible Execution Environment for Java
is Skelmir's suite of fast, compact and proven virtual
machines for Java for embedded devices. CEE-J configurations
include J2ME CLDC, MIDP, Embedded and PersonalJava(tm).
Real Time Java extensions, bytecode compilers, remote
debugging and profiling tools are also available. With
CEE-J, enabling the use of Java on almost any device
is now possible. CEE-J makes using Java practical on
devices as resource constrained as industrial controllers,
cell phones and PDAs to set-top boxes, internet appliances
and more. The CEE-J VM static footprint can scale to
under 100 KB making it flexible enough to accommodate
almost any set of requirements.
CEE-J has been ported to an extensive, and constantly
growing list of processors and operating systems. The
CEE-J board support layer makes porting easy. Skelmir's
embedded Java experts are available to assist your team
in expediting integration and accelerating time to market
of your device.
Nucleus embedded software is sold with source code
and without royalty fees. Licenses for Nucleus PLUS
start at US $12,495.
CEE-J binary distribution licenses start as low as US
$50,000. Source licensing and integration services also
available.

Skelmir is a Massachusetts-based software company specializing in scalable embedded Java solutions, specifically virtual machine and compilation technology for resource-constrained devices. Established in 1998, Skelmir's technology has been proven in the European set top box market with nearly 2,000,000 deployments to date. Skelmir's technical team is headed by CTO Mimir Reynisson, who has been personally involved with the creation of several commercially successful virtual machines for Java, including CEE-J. Skelmir's team of experts have been shipping commercial Java products since the inception of Java in 1995, having to their credit Roaster - the first Integrated Development Environment for Java for the Macintosh and core clean room virtual machines used by well known computer and software industry leaders.
