FEBRUARY 1, 2001, MOBILE, AL - Accelerated Technology, Inc. (ATI), the leader of source code and non-royalty based Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS) software, and Skelmir LLC, a developer of virtual machines, libraries and compilation tools for Java, today announced that they have formed a strategic relationship to provide ATI's Nucleus customers with a small footprint, high performance royalty-free virtual machine technology for Java for embedded devices. As part of the agreement, Skelmir's CEE-J virtual machine has been integrated with the Nucleus prototyping environment to give developers the technology they need to design and execute embedded Java applications.
The full-featured Nucleus prototyping environment is a streamlined Windows-based environment in which users can develop their ideas into products and get them to market faster. CEE-J, a highly scalable, field-proven virtual machine for Java, is the foundation for Java technology that is easily portable to new platforms.
In addition to the royalty-free benefits of the Nucleus/CEE-J technology, the integration of these two products offers developers a proven Java solution that is extremely scalable. Nucleus users can scale the software to suit some of the smallest to the most resource-rich devices without sacrificing required functionality. Whether designing a Web phone or a full-featured set-top box, Nucleus users implementing the CEE-J virtual machine will have all the tools they need to design a wide range of embedded Java applications.
With an increasing demand for virtual machine technology in the embedded market, Accelerated Technology and Skelmir are proud to offer developers a Java solution that is proven, scalable, and most importantly, royalty free.
"In keeping with our model of not charging royalties for embedded software, thereby easing our customer's buying decision, we have looked long and hard to find a royalty-free Java solution. The coming together of ATI and Skelmir has ended that search. We are pleased that our customers are now able to incorporate the benefits of 'write once run anywhere' technology into their embedded system," said Neil Henderson, president of Accelerated Technology, Inc.
"Skelmir is in the business of delivering high performance, small footprint Java solutions for embedded devices, rapidly and economically which includes royalty-free distribution options. We are delighted to have found in ATI, a partner who shares our philosophy towards and dedication to this market space" said Shari Agatstein, president and CEO of Skelmir.
The Nucleus MNT prototyping suite offers a version of all Nucleus embedded products running natively in the Windows environment. Because Nucleus MNT is based on Microsoft Visual C++, users benefit from the familiar environment in which they can build their application. Within Nucleus MNT, developers can implement prototyping versions of Nucleus products including the real-time kernel, TCP/IP networking stack with additional protocol capabilities, a file system and Web-enabling software to design the features they want in their application. Once developers have written the application and debugged most of it in Nucleus MNT, they can easily build, download and debug their application using cross development tools for their CPU environment, all within the same Visual C++ environment.
CEE-J is a clean room implementation of the Personal Java 1.1 Specification. It is also compliant with the Sun KVM and CLDC specifications for small footprint virtual machines. CEE-J is the highly scalable, field-proven virtual machine for Java from Skelmir. With the smallest usable footprint on the market, customers looking to deploy the power of Java on resource-constrained devices can control memory footprint without sacrificing functionality. Ideal for set-top boxes, Internet appliances, web pads, PDAs and other resource limited embedded devices, CEE-J provides device manufactures with Java technology optimized for their particular requirements, without consuming extra memory for features they do not need. Skelmir's CEE-J technology has been deployed on over 1,000,000 set top boxes used for European satellite television.

Skelmir is a Massachusetts-based software company specializing in scalable embedded Java solutions, specifically virtual machine and compilation technology for resource-constrained devices. Established in 1998, Skelmir's technology has been proven in the European satellite set top box marketplace with first shipments delivered to consumers during the first quarter of 2000.
Skelmir's technical team is headed by CTO Mimir Reynisson, who has been personally involved with the creation of several commercially available virtual machines for Java, including CEE-J. Skelmir's team of experts have been shipping commercial Java products since the inception of Java in 1995, having to their credit Roaster - the first Integrated Development Environment for Java for the Macintosh and core clean room virtual machines used by well known computer and software industry leaders.
