IBC, AMSTERDAM - September 13th, 2002 - NEC, a leading manufacturer of System-on-Chip (SoC) Solutions, and Skelmir LLC, developers of clean-room virtual machines for hosting Java applications on embedded devices, announce the immediate availability of the fast, efficient and market proven CEE-J virtual machine port to NEC's EMMArchitecture2, the digital TV silicon solution for set top boxes and integrated digital TVs.
This deployment-ready port of Skelmir's CEE-J VM to the EMMArchitecture2 (uPD6113x) gives digital television service providers the means for hosting MHP and Java applications on NEC's second-generation digital TV silicon solution. The combination of the power and flexibility of the EMMArchitecture2, capable of handling CPU intensive highly graphical Java applications, with Skelmir's performance-driven CEE-J virtual machine is expected to draw the attention of all performance conscious MHP consumer solutions manufacturers.
Dedicated for the digital television market, Skelmir's CEE-J technology has already been deployed in nearly 2,000,000 set top boxes to date with MHP-compliant boxes scheduled for rollout later this year. CEE-J has been chosen by consumer solutions manufacturers as the ideal embedded solution for delivering interactive content and revenue generating applications and services thanks to its small memory footprint, advanced graphical capabilities, and robust architecture.
"Skelmir has proven market experience with a solution that delivers on its promises." said Colin Smith, Head of NEC's Multimedia Applications Centre, "Early MHP trials were based on platforms with restricted performance and limited scalability. NEC and Skelmir's solution is demonstrating how much this has changed."
NEC's EMMArchitecture2 has already been touted as the solution of choice for MHP. Its level of integration, processing power available to applications and flexibility of interfacing to external devices have ensured its suitability for all markets of the digital TV world. Designed with iDTV support and network connectivity in mind, and with an extensive software drivers base, the solution provides a scalable platform that reduces design-overhead for set manufacturer's to bring a range of end-products to market.
"Skelmir's collaboration with NEC on the EMMArchitecture2 gives both companies the ability to address the need of the worldwide marketplace for an advanced platform for MHP at an affordable price point. Having teamed up with Accelerated Technology who provides Nucleus PLUS, the EMMArchitecture2 based system solution benefits from two royalty-free software technologies, minimizing system cost for the next generation advanced set top boxes without compromising on functionality and quality." said Shari Agatstein, president of Skelmir.
