FEBRUARY 19, 2002, Mobile, AL and Somerville, MA
- Accelerated
Technology, Inc. (ATI), the leader of source
code and non-royalty based Real-Time Operating Systems
(RTOS) software, and Skelmir LLC, developers of clean
room virtual machines, libraries and compilation tools
for the Embedded Java Platform, today announced
the immediate availability of all configurations of
the CEE-J VM on Nucleus PLUS for the Hitachi SH-4 processor.
This marks the first time that a commercial real-time,
royalty-free Java solution has been offered to developers
featuring the smallest memory footprint available in
the embedded market to date.
Accelerated Technology and Skelmir recognized the need
for a royalty-free solution with minimal memory requirements
and answered it by integrating the CEE-J Virtual Machine
and the Nucleus PLUS real-time kernel. This combined
technology, in conjunction with those using the SH-4
processor, provides a robust, scalable and portable
platform on which developers can build Java-enabled
embedded applications such as handheld PCs, set-top
boxes and car navigation systems quickly and easily.
There are four flavors of CEE-J available for ATIs
Nucleus PLUS real-time kernel. These include: CEE-J
for the Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC);
CEE-J for the Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP);
CEE-J for the EmbeddedJava specification; and
CEE-J for the PersonalJava specification. Support
for ARM and MIPS are scheduled for release in Q1 2002.
To best service customers looking to build Java-ready,
small footprint embedded devices, Accelerated Technology
and Skelmir created a one-stop-shopping experience by
signing a Distribution Agreement in September 2001.
Today, customers building Java-enabled embedded systems
based on the SH-4 processor can go directly to Accelerated
Technology for Nucleus PLUS and their desired CEE-J
virtual machine configuration.
"Rarely have I found a technology as compelling
as the CEE-J virtual machine. It has been constructed
based on a broad body of experience in writing virtual
machines and is complemented with some of the most efficient
and comprehensive graphics capabilities to date. This
release is the culmination of months of effort between
Skelmir and ATI. An essential concern of mine is to
ensure prompt, reliable, informative and successful
technical support to our product offering. Skelmir has
proven to be a first rate partner in this and all other
aspects of our relationship. This is truly a landmark
entry for the embedded space," said Neil Henderson,
president of Accelerated Technology, Inc.
"As any company producing such platforms can attest,
the process of building an embedded device is extensive.
From choosing the right hardware components to pinpointing
the best software stack, getting your finished product
to market is no easy endeavor. By porting all 4 CEE-J
virtual machine configurations to Nucleus PLUS on the
SH-4 platform, ATIs customers know that a combination
of Hitachis processor with ATIs RTOS under
CEE-J will give them a proven foundation for helping
to get their best products to market more quickly,"
said Shari Agatstein, president of Skelmir, LLC.
"In order to deliver quality embedded products,
having a comprehensive set of hardware and software
development tools for the application development is
essential," said Dr. Yashvant Jani, director of
Application Engineering at Hitachi Semiconductor (America)
Inc. "The combination of the CEE-J Virtual Machine
and the Nucleus Plus real-time kernel will help maximize
the benefits of the SH-4 processors and make the device
the ideal processor of choice for digital consumer applications
such as set-top boxes and Internet appliances."
The Nucleus PLUS kernel provides efficient, high performance task management, inter-task communication, inter-task synchronization, memory management, and component query features. Optimizations in system clock, interrupt and compiler register usage are only part of the advanced features provided by Nucleus PLUS. The kernel handles difficult issues such as priority inversion while minimizing the interrupt latency to a few microseconds. The source code of Nucleus PLUS is fully documented and it is provided with a manual containing an in-depth description of its internal data and processing structure.
CEE-J, Skelmirs Compatible Execution Environment
for the Embedded Java Platform is Skelmirs
suite of fast, compact and proven virtual machines for
enabling Java on embedded devices. CEE-J configurations
include support for CLDC, MIDP, Embedded and PersonalJava.
Real Time Java extensions, bytecode compilers, remote
debugging and profiling tools are also available. With
CEE-J, enabling the use of Java on almost any device
is now possible. CEE-J makes using Java practical on
devices as resource constrained as industrial controllers,
cell phones and PDAs to set-top boxes, internet appliances
and more. The CEE-J VM static footprint can scale to
under 100 KB making it flexible enough to accommodate
almost any set of requirements.
CEE-J has been ported to an extensive and constantly
growing list of processors and operating systems. The
CEE-J board support layer makes porting easy. Skelmirs
embedded Java experts are available to assist your team
in expediting integration and accelerating time to market
of your device.
Nucleus embedded software is sold with source code
and without royalty fees. Licenses for Nucleus PLUS
start at $12,495.
CEE-J binary distribution licenses start as low as US$50,000.
Source licensing and integration services also available.
Accelerated Technology, Inc., the leading no-royalty
embedded software solution, is headquartered in Mobile,
Alabama with sales offices and distributors worldwide.
By providing embedded systems developers with a focus
on service, well-documented source code and industry
leading non-royalty based Real-Time Operating Systems
(RTOS) software, ATI's Nucleus RTOS software shortens
