Interactive TV Solution Providers Showcase ATI's XILLEON™ Based Applications

- New and innovative applications provide scalability with standards compliance -

MARKHAM, Ontario - April 7, 2003 - ATI Technologies Inc. (TSX:ATY, NASDAQ:ATYT) today announced several interactive TV solutions from Metro Link, Skelmir, Espial and Agfa Monotype running on ATI’s XILLEON™ reference platform. These solutions will enable OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) of set-top boxes, digital TVs (DTVs), and other consumer electronics devices to benefit from an integrated cost-effective application environment that will reduce time to market.

“I am thrilled that these companies ported their interactive TV solutions to ATI’s XILLEON reference platform so quickly and easily,” said David Gould, Senior Software Marketing Manager, DTV Group, Consumer Products Division, ATI Technologies Inc. “These innovations demonstrate the popularity and flexibility of ATI’s DTV solution and enable our customers to get end products to market quickly.”

“We bring small, fast, high-quality font rendering and display capabilities to the XILLEON reference platform,” said Jack Murphy, Director of Engineering, Display and Imaging at Agfa Monotype. “With iType ported to XILLEON, we’re pleased to be working with ATI to extend its commitment for providing technologies to OEMs seeking greater efficiencies and value. Companies will be in a better position to bring products to market faster.”

“ATI powered with Espial provides the critical time to market advantage developers require with the ability to deliver a look and feel for the product that is consumer friendly and entertaining for the user, ” said Dr. Neale Foster, Director of TV, Espial.

“Metro Link is extremely pleased to be collaborating with ATI, one of the market leaders in DTV silicon solutions,” said Tony Naples, Vice President Sales & Marketing, Metro Link. “The ATI XILLEON family of processors sets the bar for today’s DTV chips with dynamic multi-streaming video, robust graphics and the processing power to take full advantage of Metro Link’s Metro MediaWorksTM software. The modular nature of Metro MediaWorks can be fully exploited on a full-featured multi-media system or selectively implemented on mid-range and low-end units that emphasize value, all driven by the same ATI XILLEON family of processors.”

“The ATI XILLEON is an exceptionally high performing integrated system-on-chip for our CEE-J™ VM,” said Shari L. Agatstein, President, Skelmir. “CEE-J has made a name for itself in performance, scalability and graphics. XILLEON’s 300Mhz CPU and high performance 2D/3D graphics, enable our customers to meet the needs of an ever expanding set of interactive STB and DTV standards.”

The collaborating interactive TV solutions include:

Agfa Monotype’s TrueType®-based font engine and iType font suites support a collection of delta-hinted display fonts engineered for optimal readability on TV screens, and a font pack that meets FCC requirements (EIA-708B standard) for closed captioning on analog and digital TVs.

Espial’s Suite for TV™, a comprehensive set of deployed revenue generating standards-centric, operating system-independent applications that are compliant with DVB-MHP (Digital Video Broadcasting –Multimedia Home Platform) and Cable Labs OCAP (OpenCable Application Platform) and is complimentary to established middleware platforms.
MetroLink’s Metro MediaWorks, a powerful, multi-function, scalable media engine that can be deployed in a full-featured STB, Digital TV, and Home Media Center or distributed in modular form for single purpose consumer electronic devices. The engine includes applications for Personal Video Recording (PVR), processing analog signals (NTSC and PAL), digital streams from broadcast, terrestrial and satellite (ATSC, DVB and DVB-T), MP3 (Playback Creation & Record), PSIP, and customizable user interface.

Skelmir’s CEE-J Virtual Machine (CEE-J) is a highly scalable, field-proven virtual machine for hosting Java™ applications with the smallest usable footprint on the market. CEE-J provides the means for hosting OCAP, MHP, HAVi as well as other DTV related Java-based application environments.

ATI’s XILLEON integrates into a single chip all processor, graphics, video, audio, and I/O (input and output) capabilities needed in a set-top box or digital TV. Features include a 300 MHz MIPS® CPU (central processing unit), dual-HD (high definition) capable MPEG decoder, audio decoder, dual display engine, 2D and 3D graphics engine, conditional access, transport demultiplexers, PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect), USB (universal serial bus), and hard disk drive interfaces.

Demonstrations of Agfa Monotype’s iType fonts, Espial’s Suite for TV™, MetroLink’s MetroMedia™, and Skelmir’s CEEJ™ along with ATI’s DTV technologies will be on display at NAB 2003 in ATI’s booth SU7313 (south hall) April 7-11, 2003 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
