Boston MA - November 19, 2002 - Three US-based companies are demonstrating a joint technology at the Embedded Systems Conference in Boston from November 19 - 20. The demo will be shown at Applied Data Systems' booth #717.
The demonstration features Font Fusion, Bitstream's premier font rendering engine, and a core set of Bitstream fonts, running on Skelmir's fast, efficient and market proven CEE-J virtual machine technology. The demo is powered by Applied Data System's Graphics Client Plus, a RISC-based StrongARM system, known for its low power-consuming application-ready design.
Bitstream, a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based company, is the leading developer of font technology, digital fonts, and custom font designs. Bitstream has licensed Font Fusion to leading developers in the broadcast community. Font Fusion performs well in memory- and performance-constrained environments. For example, a complete traditional Chinese TrueType font with over 13,000 characters can occupy as much as 8 MB. With Font Fusion, the same characters occupy less than 0.5 MB, representing considerable savings in memory and disk space costs.
Skelmir LLC, a Somerville, Massachusetts-based company, develops CEE-J. CEE-J is a suite of fast, compact and proven clean room virtual machines for hosting MHP, OSGi, browsers and other Java applications on embedded devices.
Applied Data Systems (ADS), a Columbia, Maryland-based company, is a leading developer of "application-ready" Intel StrongARM® and XScale®-based systems, used for powering PDAs, mobile, wireless and Internet-connected portable applications. With its family of proven custom and off-the-shelf embedded systems, ADS specializes in bringing customers products to market quickly and effectively within a few months.
"Working with the teams and technologies of both Applied Data Systems and Bitstream has enabled Skelmir to offer customers tremendous advantages. The robust and easy to use development systems of ADS give CEE-J licensees an excellent platform for quickly creating and deploying to market their applications and devices. Bitstream's Font Fusion gives CEE-J licensees a superior choice for True Type font rendering" said Shari Agatstein, president of Skelmir.
"This joint capability allows broadcasters to make it quick, easy and affordable for customers to deploy Java applications on their embedded systems," said Anna Chagnon, President of Bitstream. "Skelmir's VM is a perfect match for Bitstream's Font Fusion, a small fast font engine that runs on any device and platform and renders high-quality text at any resolution."
"Bitstream's software with Skelmir's CEE-J provides a fast and responsive technology combination for consumer solutions manufacturers needs, which works well on our low-power consuming platforms," said Bob Olsen, CEO of Applied Data Systems.
About CEE-J
Skelmir's family of CEE-J clean room virtual machines
and libraries are available for a wide range of processors,
operating systems and embedded virtual machine configurations.
Easily ported to new platforms, CEE-J offers advanced
graphical capabilities ideal for digital television
displays and MHP enabled appliances, onboard navigation
systems, Internet appliances, handheld wireless communications
and more. Independent developers and companies looking
to obtain commercial use and distribution licenses for
CEE-J can do so by contacting Skelmir directly.
About Font Fusion
Font Fusion provides developers with full font fidelity
and high-quality typographic output at any resolution
on any device, while maintaining the integrity of the
original character shapes. Font Fusion is small and
fast. Most developers can compile the source code in
32-105 KB, depending on options. It generates more than
16,000 characters per second, using the Arial font at
25 lines per em on a 233MHz Pentium® II processor,
cache turned off.
Font Fusion is designed for operating systems, software applications, Web applications, low-resolution screen devices, multimedia servers, high-definition television screens (HDTVs), set-top boxes, continuous tone printers, personal digital assistants (PDAs), and other embedded systems and information and wireless appliances.
About Graphics Client Plus
The Graphics Client Plus is one of the most versatile
and richly featured RISC-based embedded single board
computer systems. The GC+, an ideal "application-ready"
system includes 3 serial ports, CAN, Ethernet and ADSmart
IO. For more information, see http://www.applieddata.net/products_gcplus.asp
